Why silicone should not be your default caulk

The problem is that people reach for it out of habit, and cured silicone quietly ruins the work that comes next: paint will not stick to it, filler will not replace it, and the next bead of caulk will not bond over it. It is both of those things, and that is exactly why it causes so much trouble in the wrong spot. Walk into Home Hardware, ask for silicone, and you will get exactly that, a tube of pure silicone, even when the joint in front of you is ordinary interior caulking: a wall-to-trim gap or a wood-to-wood joint that is going to be painted. Those joints do not want silicone at all. Tell the person at the counter what the joint actually is, wall to trim, painted wood, or a wet shower seam, and you will walk out with the right tube instead of the default one.

The fix it ruins first: anything you are going to paint
If a joint gets painted, silicone is off the table before you compare anything else. Paint will not bond to cured silicone. The silicone oils that make the sealant so waterproof also stop waterborne paint from wetting the surface, so it beads, fish-eyes, and flakes away within weeks (GE Sealants, retrieved 2026). There is no primer I trust to fix it reliably.
That covers most of the trim in your house: baseboards, door and window casing, crown moulding, the gap where trim meets the wall. All of it gets painted, so all of it wants a paintable caulk. I use a paintable acrylic latex on low-movement trim gaps and a polyurethane or high-elongation elastomeric where the joint actually moves. The label is where people get caught, so read the tube. A product marked "siliconized acrylic" is mostly acrylic with a splash of silicone and it paints fine. A product marked "100 percent silicone" does not.

Nail holes and cracks are not a caulk job
Silicone is not a filler, and this is the second place it wrecks a paint job. Silicone cannot be sanded flush. It stays rubbery, so a blob pushed into a nail hole or a dent sits proud of the surface, grabs the roller, and telegraphs through the finish coat. Then it repels the paint on top of it, so you get a shiny bump that no amount of coats will hide.
Nail holes, dents, gouges, and small drywall cracks want a proper filler: a lightweight spackle or a patching compound that dries hard, sands smooth, and takes paint like the wall around it. Wider or structural drywall damage is a repair, not a fill, and that is drywall repair territory. On a Toronto job: The worst version of this I see is silicone smeared into drywall seams or corner cracks as a quick fix before a repaint. It never sands, it never paints, and the only way to get a clean wall afterward is to dig it all out and patch the spot properly. A two-dollar tube of the wrong product can turn a simple repaint into a repair.
The next re-caulk: silicone poisons the joint
Here is the one that costs the most down the road. Nothing bonds to cured silicone, not even fresh silicone. Once it cures it forms a skin, so a new bead sticks to that skin rather than to the wall, and any thin film left behind blocks adhesion completely (GE Sealants, retrieved 2026). Silicone can also leave an invisible residue behind, so a joint that once held it can reject paint and caulk even after the visible bead is gone.
That means a joint sealed with silicone is not a joint you can touch up later. To re-caulk it properly you have to cut the whole bead out and then remove every trace of the residue with a blade and a solvent wipe before anything new will hold. On an exterior with dozens of window and door joints, that is real labour that a paintable product would have saved you. What this means for your budget: Silicone is very hard to sand or scrape once it cures, so pulling out an old bead and cleaning the joint back to bare, sound surface is slow, hands-on work. On a repaint, that removal time can add a real chunk to the price before any painting even starts. Two rules follow from that. Before you reach for silicone, make sure the joint genuinely needs it. And if it does, tool the bead as cleanly as you can the first time, because a neat bead you can leave alone costs nothing later, while a messy one, or one in the wrong spot, turns into billable hours to cut out.
Wide or deep gaps need backing, not more bead
When a gap is big, the instinct is to fill it with a thick rope of silicone. That is the wrong fix twice over. Caulk is not a gap filler, and a deep bead that touches the back of the joint bonds on three sides, which stops it from stretching and tears it apart the first time the joint moves.
Any gap wider than about a quarter inch wants backer rod: a foam cord you press into the joint to control the depth and give the sealant a proper shape. Backer rod prevents that three-sided adhesion and lets the bead flex, and the joint-sealant standard ASTM C1193 puts the target at roughly a two-to-one width-to-depth ratio, so the bead is thinner in the middle where it needs to stretch (Sika, backer rod, retrieved 2026). Then you seal over it with a paintable, high-movement product. Truly structural gaps are not a caulk problem at all, they are a carpentry or masonry problem, and no tube fixes them.
Porous surfaces: brick, stucco, and bare wood
Silicone struggles to grip porous materials, and this is where it lets go outside. On brick, stucco, concrete, and bare wood, silicone needs a dedicated primer just to hold on, and without it the bead peels off the masonry in a season or two.
Polyurethane is the pick here. It bonds aggressively to porous surfaces, moves with the joint, and takes your finish coat, which is why it is my default on painted exterior masonry work. Where silicone actually earns its place
None of this makes silicone a bad product. It is the best product there is for the right joint, and I keep it on the truck for exactly those spots. Silicone belongs on wet, unpainted, non-porous joints, where its long weatherproof life, often two decades or more on the right joint, has nothing to do with paint and everything to do with shrugging off water and temperature.
That means the tub and shower surround, around a sink or a backsplash, a glass block, a metal flashing lap, or a colour-matched bead on an unpainted black window frame. In a bathroom, reach for a mildew-resistant kitchen and bath grade so the seal resists the mould that plain caulk grows in a damp room. The rule is simple: silicone on the wet seam you will never paint, and a paintable product everywhere the brush travels.

What I usually spec: I sort every joint into one of two buckets before I load a gun. Is it getting painted, or is it a bare wet seam? Painted joints get a paintable product, acrylic latex or polyurethane. Bare wet seams get 100 percent silicone. The moment a joint fits neither bucket is usually the moment silicone is about to cause trouble.

So when should you reach for silicone?
Ask three questions before the tube comes off the shelf: is this joint going to be painted, does the surface soak things up, and will I need to touch it up later? If the joint gets painted, if the surface is porous, or if you want to be able to re-caulk it down the road, silicone is the wrong choice, and a paintable product will save you the trouble. Save silicone for the unpainted wet joints where nothing else lasts as long.
