Quick Answer: Kitchen Painting Costs in Toronto

Kitchen wall painting runs $400 to $750. Kitchen cabinet painting runs $2,500 to $8,500+. The difference comes down to what you are painting and how much prep your kitchen needs. Walls are a one-to-two-day job. Cabinets take 5 to 10 business days because we spray doors off-site for a factory-smooth finish.

Kitchen Wall Painting vs Cabinet Painting: Two Different Jobs

Most people say "I want my kitchen painted" without realizing that walls and cabinets are completely different projects with different processes, timelines, and price points.

Kitchen wall painting means your walls, ceiling, and trim. It is similar to any interior painting project, except your kitchen demands more prep because of grease, moisture, and heat. This is the $400 to $750 job.

Kitchen cabinet painting means your cabinet doors, drawer fronts, and cabinet boxes. This requires removal, degreasing, sanding, bonding primer, multiple coats of spray paint, and reinstallation. It is a specialized trade. We cover this in detail on our cabinet painting Toronto page. This is the $2,500 to $8,500+ job.

You can do one or both. Most clients who are refreshing their kitchen do both at the same time to save on mobilization costs and get the full transformation in one go.

Why Kitchen Painting Is Not a DIY Job

I have seen enough failed DIY kitchen paint jobs to fill a warehouse. The kitchen is the hardest room in your house to paint properly, and here is why.

Grease Buildup Is Invisible and Everywhere

You cannot see it, but your kitchen walls are coated in a thin film of cooking residue. It builds up over months and years, especially within a two-metre radius of your stove. If you roll paint over grease, you get adhesion failure. The paint looks fine for a week, then starts peeling in sheets.

Our process starts with a thorough degreasing using TSP (trisodium phosphate) cleaners. We scrub every surface that is getting painted. This is the step that separates a professional kitchen paint job from a weekend disaster.

Moisture and Steam Demand the Right Products

Between the stove, the dishwasher, the kettle, and the sink, your kitchen produces more moisture than any room except the bathroom. Flat or matte paint absorbs that moisture, softens, and eventually bubbles or peels.

That is why we exclusively use satin or semi-gloss finishes in kitchens. These sheens create a moisture-resistant barrier that holds up for years and wipes clean with a damp cloth.

Temperature Swings Stress the Paint Film

Your oven hits 200+ degrees Celsius. The wall behind it gets warm, then cools when you are done cooking. This thermal cycling expands and contracts the paint film. Cheap paint cracks under this stress. Kitchen-grade paints from Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams are formulated with flexible resins that handle these swings without cracking.

Paint Recommendations for Kitchens

After years of testing products in real Toronto kitchens, here is what I actually use and recommend:

For walls and ceilings:

  • Benjamin Moore Regal Select (Satin) — My go-to for most kitchen walls. Excellent washability, great coverage, and holds up to steam and grease.
  • Sherwin-Williams Cashmere (Satin) — Beautiful finish with strong moisture resistance. Slightly more self-levelling than Regal.
  • Benjamin Moore Aura (Semi-Gloss) — For walls directly behind stoves or sinks that take serious abuse. Bulletproof durability.

For trim and window frames:

  • Semi-gloss or high-gloss in the same product line as your walls. Trim takes more physical contact, so the harder sheen protects it.

For cabinets:

  • Spray-applied cabinet-grade enamel. We cover this on our cabinet painting page. Do not brush or roll cabinets. You will see every stroke.

All of our paints are low-VOC, so your kitchen does not smell like a chemical plant. You can cook dinner the same evening we finish. For a deeper dive into sheen choices, check out our guide on paint finishes explained.

Our Kitchen Painting Process

Step 1: Protection

We cover your cabinets, countertops, appliances, and floors with plastic sheeting and drop cloths. Your kitchen stays functional throughout the project. We just need clear access to the walls.

Step 2: Degreasing and Cleaning

TSP wash on every paintable surface. This is non-negotiable. We scrub walls, ceilings, trim, and any surface that is getting painted. The area around the stove and above the countertops gets extra attention because that is where grease concentrates the most. We also check for mildew near the sink and dishwasher areas and treat it with a mildew-killing primer if needed.

Step 3: Repairs and Patching

Nail holes, scuffs, dents, and cracks get filled with lightweight filler, then sanded smooth. Kitchen walls tend to have more damage than other rooms because of the constant activity, steam exposure, and the occasional pot handle hitting the wall. If there is significant drywall damage or water staining from plumbing issues, we handle full repairs before any paint goes on.

Step 4: Priming

A coat of bonding primer goes on every surface. The primer seals stains, blocks odours from cooking residue, and gives the topcoat a uniform surface to grip. In kitchens, skipping primer is not an option.

Step 5: Two Coats of Paint

We apply two full coats of kitchen-grade satin or semi-gloss paint. Brushes for edges and trim, rollers for walls and ceilings. Proper dry time between coats. No rushing.

Step 6: Cleanup and Walkthrough

We remove all coverings, clean up completely, and walk through the finished kitchen with you. I want you to see every wall, every edge, every corner in good lighting. If anything is not right, we fix it before we leave. Your kitchen is ready to use that same evening.

2026 Kitchen Colour Trends in Toronto

Colour is personal, but here is what I am seeing across Toronto kitchens right now:

Walls: Warm whites and soft greiges dominate. Benjamin Moore White Dove (OC-17), Chantilly Lace (OC-65), and Edgecomb Gray (HC-173) are my three most-requested wall colours. They work with virtually any cabinet colour and reflect light beautifully in both north-facing and south-facing kitchens.

Accent walls: Sage green and muted olive tones are having a moment. A single accent wall in a colour like Sherwin-Williams Evergreen Fog or Benjamin Moore Cushing Green adds warmth without overwhelming the space.

Cabinets: White remains king, but two-tone is growing fast. White uppers with a navy, charcoal, or sage lower is the most popular combination I am seeing in 2026. Read more about cabinet colour options in our kitchen cabinet painting in condos guide.

Condo Kitchen Painting: What Is Different

About 40 percent of our kitchen painting work is in Toronto condos, so we know the drill. Here is what makes condo kitchens different:

Smaller footprint, bigger impact. Most condo kitchens are galley or L-shaped, running 60 to 120 square feet of wall space. The cost is lower ($400 to $550 for walls), but the visual transformation is enormous because you see every surface at a glance.

Building logistics. We handle elevator bookings, loading dock reservations, and building access. We bring floor protection for hallways, park in visitor spots, and use low-odour paints to keep your neighbours happy. We have worked in most major Toronto condo buildings and know the rules before we show up.

Ventilation matters. Condo kitchens often have recirculating range hoods instead of exterior vents, which means more grease accumulation on walls. We account for this with extra degreasing time.

Combine with other rooms. Most condo owners pair kitchen painting with condo painting for the entire unit or at least the bathroom to maximize the refresh while we are already set up.

Kitchen Respraying and Repainting Services

Whether you call it kitchen respraying, kitchen repainting, or kitchen refinishing, the goal is the same: make your kitchen look new without a full renovation.

Kitchen respraying typically refers to spray-painting cabinet doors and drawer fronts for a factory-smooth finish. We remove all doors, take them to our workshop, and spray them in a controlled dust-free environment. This eliminates brush marks and roller texture. The result looks like new cabinets at a fraction of the cost.

Kitchen repainting covers everything: walls, ceilings, trim, and cabinets. It is the full package. When clients tell me they want a "kitchen repainting service," they usually mean the complete transformation, and that is what we deliver.

Both services include our 5-year warranty on workmanship and materials.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does kitchen painting cost in Toronto?
Kitchen wall painting in Toronto costs $400 to $750 depending on size and prep needed. A small galley kitchen runs $400 to $500. A medium kitchen costs $500 to $650. A large kitchen with high ceilings hits $650 to $750+. Cabinet painting is separate and runs $2,500 to $8,500+ depending on cabinet count. All prices include degreasing, priming, two coats of grease-resistant paint, and cleanup.
What is the best paint finish for a kitchen?
Satin or semi-gloss in an acrylic latex formula. Both repel moisture and wipe clean easily, which matters when you are dealing with cooking splatters and steam daily. Satin gives a subtle sheen that hides minor wall imperfections. Semi-gloss is shinier but tougher, ideal for areas directly behind the stove or sink. Avoid flat or matte finishes in kitchens. They absorb grease and moisture and look dingy within months.
Do I need to degrease kitchen walls before painting?
Yes, degreasing is non-negotiable. Kitchen walls accumulate an invisible film of cooking residue over months and years, especially near the stove and above countertops. If you paint over grease, the new paint will not bond properly. It peels within weeks. We use TSP-based degreasers to strip this buildup completely before priming. This is the step most DIYers skip and exactly why their kitchen paint jobs fail.
How long does it take to paint a kitchen?
One to two days for walls, ceiling, and trim. Day one covers protection, degreasing, repairs, and priming. Day two is two coats of paint plus final cleanup. If your kitchen has heavy grease buildup, water stains, or extensive patching, add half a day. Cabinet painting is a separate timeline of 5 to 10 business days because doors go to our workshop for spray finishing.
Can you paint my kitchen cabinets and walls at the same time?
Yes, and most clients do. We start with cabinet door removal and wall prep simultaneously. Walls get painted on-site over one to two days while cabinet doors go to our spray booth for factory-smooth finishing. When doors come back, we reinstall and do final touch-ups. Bundling saves you money on mobilization and gives you a complete kitchen transformation in one project.
What colours are trending for Toronto kitchens in 2026?
Warm whites like Benjamin Moore White Dove and Chantilly Lace remain dominant. Sage green and olive tones are gaining traction as accent colours, especially on islands and lower cabinets. Deep navy and charcoal are popular for two-tone cabinet schemes. For walls, soft greiges like Edgecomb Gray and Balboa Mist pair well with almost any cabinet colour. We bring colour samples to every consultation so you can see options in your actual kitchen lighting.
Is kitchen painting worth it in a condo?
Absolutely. Condo kitchens are typically compact, which means the cost is lower but the visual impact is massive. A fresh coat on walls plus painted cabinets can make a dated condo kitchen look brand new for $3,000 to $5,500 total. We handle condo logistics including elevator bookings, building access, and low-odour paints that keep neighbours happy. Many condo owners pair kitchen painting with bathroom painting for a full refresh.
Do you offer a warranty on kitchen painting?
Every kitchen paint job comes with our 5-year warranty. That covers peeling, cracking, and adhesion failure. If something goes wrong, we come back and fix it at no cost. We can offer this because we do the prep work properly: degreasing, priming, and using kitchen-grade paints designed for high-humidity, high-traffic environments.
