Everyone repeats a rule about not painting vinyl siding dark. Almost nobody can tell you where the rule comes from. It is in the paint data sheets, it is a specific number, and the two big manufacturers do not quite agree on it.

Ask ten painters whether you can paint vinyl siding and you will get ten confident answers and about two useful ones.

The confident version usually involves a number. "Never go below LRV 55." I have said it myself on job sites for years. And when I went looking for where that number actually comes from, I found something worth writing about: it is not on any manufacturer's website, it is not published by the siding industry's trade association, and the contractor blogs repeating it cannot point to a source.

So let us do this properly, because what people are usually asking, behind "can I paint my siding", is whether they are about to ruin it.

The vinyl colour rule, and where it actually comes from

Benjamin Moore puts it this way, from the Canadian technical data sheet for Aura Waterborne Exterior (document F634 CE, revised 12 July 2024):

Colors that are safe for use on vinyl siding - Do not paint vinyl with any color darker than the original color or having a Light Reflective Value (LRV) of less than 55 unless it is in the Benjamin Moore approved Colors for Vinyl palette and comports with the specific vinyl manufacturer guidelines when making the color selection and painting. Otherwise, the color will absorb more heat, possibly causing the siding to warp, resulting in additional repair.

Sherwin-Williams says almost the same thing, from the Canadian product data sheet for Duration Exterior Acrylic Latex (K33-Q series, revised March 2026):

Do not paint vinyl with any color darker than the original color or having a Light Reflective Value (LRV) of less than 56 unless VinylSafe® Colors are used. If VinylSafe colors are not used the vinyl may warp. Follow all painting guidelines of the vinyl manufacturer when painting. Only paint properly installed vinyl siding. Deviating from the manufacturer's painting guidelines may cause the warranty to be voided.

Light Reflectance Value is a 0 to 100 scale: 0 is a theoretical perfect black, 100 a perfect white. A colour with a low LRV absorbs more light, and absorbed light becomes heat. Vinyl is a thermoplastic. Get it hot enough and it stops holding its shape.

The condition everyone drops

Read either sheet again and notice it is an and, not an or. Not darker than the original colour, and not below the LRV floor.

That second clause catches people out constantly. Your siding is a mid-beige. You pick a grey at LRV 62, comfortably above the threshold, and it is still visibly darker than the beige. By both manufacturers' wording, that is out.

Sherwin-Williams' own architect-facing page describes the pre-VinylSafe world exactly this way: using a dark colour on top of a lighter one would cause the substrate to buckle, and your only option was to choose the same colour or lighter.

The escape hatch, and its fine print

Both manufacturers sell an engineered way around the rule.

Sherwin-Williams VinylSafe offers 100 colour options including a limited selection of darker colours. Benjamin Moore Colors for Vinyl is described in its contractor guidance as a curated palette of 75-plus colours.

Now the fine print, which is on the Duration sheet itself: VinylSafe colours are formulated to resist warping or buckling when applied to a sound, stable vinyl substrate.

That condition is doing a lot of quiet work in that sentence. A vinyl-safe dark colour is not a licence to paint siding that is already brittle, cracked, sun-degraded, or loose in the channels. The engineered palette manages heat absorption. It does not repair a substrate. If your vinyl is 30 years old and snaps when you flex it, no palette saves you.

One more product caution. Sherwin-Williams' own pages do not agree with each other about which product lines carry VinylSafe: the homeowner and architect pages list a broader range than the painting-contractor page does. Do not take my word or a blog's word for which product carries it. Ask the store to confirm against current documentation for the specific product you are buying.

What I tell clients with vinyl: bring me the colour you want and I will look up its LRV before we talk about anything else. It takes thirty seconds and it has ended a lot of conversations early. Homeowners who have set their heart on a deep charcoal are better off hearing "not on vinyl, not without the engineered palette" at the quote than after their south elevation starts to ripple.

Why vinyl is hard on a paint film even when the colour is right

The colour rule gets all the attention. The mechanical problem gets none, and it explains the cracking you see at panel overlaps on painted vinyl.

Vinyl siding is engineered to move. Not tolerated to move. Required to move.

The industry's trade association, now the Polymeric Exterior Products Association and formerly the Vinyl Siding Institute, publishes installation requirements that make this explicit. From its installation manual:

  • Leave a quarter-inch (6.4 mm) gap between the siding and all corner posts and channels to allow for expansion and contraction
  • Increase that to three-eighths of an inch (9.5 mm) when installing in temperatures below 4.4°C
  • Leave approximately one thirty-second of an inch (0.8 mm) between the fastener head and the siding, about the thickness of a dime
  • Panels must move freely in a side-to-side direction once fastened

Look at the second one. The required gap grows by 50% purely because of the temperature on installation day. That is a manufacturer trade body telling you, in a spec, how much this material moves across a temperature range.

Now picture a continuous paint film spanning the joint between a panel and a channel, a gap that is engineered to open and close all year. The siding is designed to slide. The paint is not.

I want to be careful here about what is documented and what is inference. The movement requirements are published and verifiable. I have not found a manufacturer document that specifically attributes paint cracking at overlaps to that movement. What I can tell you is that it is what I see on painted vinyl in Toronto, and that the mechanism is consistent with what the installation spec requires.

One correction while I am at it, because it circulates widely among painters including me until recently: the reason paint struggles on vinyl is not that vinyl is a low-surface-energy plastic like polyethylene. PVC sits in the medium range. The real adhesion challenges are the smooth glossy factory finish, surface chalk on the vinyl itself, mould-release and plasticizer migration, and that constant thermal movement.

Also worth knowing, since it comes up: the Vinyl Siding Institute no longer exists under that name, and I could not find any published position from PEPA on painting vinyl siding at all. If you see an article confidently citing "the Vinyl Siding Institute's position on painting," treat it with suspicion.

Aluminum: one problem, and it is solvable

Aluminum is the easier repaint, and the industry documentation treats it that way.

Sherwin-Williams' contractor FAQ answers the question almost head-on: aluminum siding is normally painted only after it has faded and chalked, and if the chalkiness is not removed, the paint will not adhere properly. And: the key thing to consider when repainting aluminum siding is not the method of application, but the surface prep.

That is a very different tone from the vinyl guidance. No colour restriction, no warning about warping, no instruction to consult the siding manufacturer. Just: clean it properly.

What chalking actually is

Sherwin-Williams defines chalking as the formation of fine white powder on the surface of the paint film due to weathering, which may give the appearance of colour fading. Among the named causes is an excessively thick chalk layer on factory-finished siding, which is exactly what aluminum siding is.

Dunn-Edwards describes the mechanism independently: UV rays break down the binder that holds pigment in place, causing loose particles to rise to the surface. And the consequence: severe chalking makes it more difficult for new paint to adhere, at which point the residue has to be removed completely.

The free test

Rub your fingers or a dark cloth across the siding. If a dusty, powder-like film comes off, that is chalking.

Do that on all four elevations, because the south and west sides will almost always be worse. Then look at what came off. Light residue is a cleaning job. Heavy residue that keeps coming off after washing is the difference between a ten-year paint job and a two-year one.

Getting the chalk off

Sherwin-Williams' remedy is to remove the chalk residue by rinsing or power washing with an appropriate cleaner, repeating and scrubbing if needed, rinsing with clear water, and allowing the surface to dry completely.

You will notice there is no PSI figure and no cleaner mixing ratio in that instruction. That is not an oversight on my part. I could not find pressure settings, nozzle angles, or detergent ratios published by any manufacturer or standards body. The numbers that circulate on contractor blogs (1,200 to 1,500 PSI, 25-degree tip, one cup of TSP per gallon) have no primary source behind them. Our own shop practice is to wash at low pressure with a detergent, scrub the chalked elevations by hand, and rinse until a cloth comes away clean, then let it dry a full day. That is what we do, not a spec I can point you to.

The primer question, and a correction worth making

The instinct is to reach for INSL-X STIX, because it is the bonding primer everyone knows and its substrate list does include aluminum. Its numbers are good: VOC 87.6 g/L, coverage 300-400 sq ft per 3.79L, and application down to 1.7°C, which is unusually low for a primer.

But read the prep clause. STIX requires that all surfaces be clean, dry, sound, and free of dirt, grease, oils, waxes, mildew, and other surface contaminants. STIX is a bonding primer for slick substrates. It is not a chalk-binding primer. Putting it over chalk you did not remove is the same mistake as putting paint over chalk you did not remove.

The product category actually built for residual chalk is a chalk-binding additive or primer. PPG's Flood E-B Emulsa-Bond, for example, is described as improving adhesion of exterior water-based coatings to chalky wood, masonry, or aluminum surfaces. Note that is a PPG/Flood product, not a Sherwin-Williams one, and it is worth attributing correctly.

The honest hierarchy: remove the chalk properly first. Use a chalk-binding product for what remains. Use a bonding primer for slick or glossy areas. They are three different jobs.

The temperature trap on metal siding

This one costs Toronto crews real money and almost nobody flags it at the quote.

Both Sherwin-Williams exterior products state a general minimum application temperature of 1.7°C (35°F). Both then carry a footnote, and here it is verbatim from the Duration Canadian sheet:

On large expanses of metal siding, the air, surface, and material temperatures must be 10°C (50°F) or higher.

Ten degrees, not 1.7. On surface temperature, not just air, and metal sheds heat fast once the sun comes off it.

Benjamin Moore's vinyl siding contractor guidance sets its own floor too: do not apply when air and surface temperatures are below 4.4°C (40°F). That is higher than the 1.7°C its Aura Exterior sheet allows generally.

If your house is aluminum-sided and somebody quotes you a late-September start, ask which product they are using and which temperature clause they are working to. It is a fair question and a good painter will have the answer.

What fails, and in what order

On vinyl:

  1. Warping from a colour that was too dark. The documented mechanism, named by both manufacturers. It shows on the south and west elevations first and it is not repairable by repainting.
  2. Painting siding that was never sound. VinylSafe's own wording conditions its performance on a sound, stable substrate. Brittle, cracked, or loose siding stays brittle, cracked, and loose.
  3. Film cracking at panel overlaps. Consistent with the movement the installation spec requires, though I have not found a manufacturer document that states the causal link.
  4. Adhesion failure on an unwashed factory finish. Benjamin Moore's guidance is blunt: any mildew, chalk, or dirt must be removed. Yes, vinyl chalks too.

On aluminum:

  1. Peeling from painting over chalk. The best-documented failure in this whole article, stated by Sherwin-Williams and independently by Dunn-Edwards.
  2. Sun-facing elevations first. Mechanistically consistent with UV binder breakdown, and it matches what I see, though I could not find an authoritative source stating it as a rule.
  3. Cold-weather application on metal. The 10°C clause exists for a reason.

Paint it or replace it?

Trim, soffit, and eaves usually go at the same time, and aluminum fascia and eavestrough fall under metal painting rather than siding.

I am going to be straight about the limits of what I can tell you here.

There is no trustworthy public cost data for siding painting versus replacement in Canada. The figures you find, whether dollars per square foot to paint or to replace or a total replacement cost, all trace back to lead-generation and contractor marketing sites with no methodology behind them. The same is true of repaint lifespan claims, where I found ranges from four years to fifteen for the same material, all equally unsourced. I am not going to launder those numbers into this article by citing them.

What I can give you is the decision framework, which is more useful anyway:

Paint it if: the substrate is sound, the colour you want clears the LRV rule or lives in the engineered palette, and the chalk (on aluminum) washes off to a clean cloth. A sound repaint on siding is a fraction of replacement cost.

Replace it if: vinyl is brittle, cracked, warped, or loose at the channels; aluminum is significantly dented, because it will look dented in a new colour; or you want a dark colour on vinyl badly enough that it is driving the whole decision. If the colour is non-negotiable and it is below the floor, replacement is the honest route.

The conversation I have most often: a client with 1970s aluminum on a bungalow, chalked to the point where it comes off on your sleeve, who has been told by a siding company that it needs replacing. Usually it does not. Aluminum that is chalked but not dented is close to an ideal repaint candidate, and it is the case the paint manufacturers document as routine. The siding that genuinely needs replacing is more often the 30-year-old vinyl that has gone brittle, and that is the one people try to save with paint.

Can you paint vinyl siding?
Yes, and both major paint manufacturers publish instructions for it. What they also publish is a hard colour limit. Benjamin Moore''s Aura Exterior Canadian data sheet says not to paint vinyl with any colour darker than the original, or with a Light Reflective Value below 55, unless the colour is in Benjamin Moore''s approved Colors for Vinyl palette, because otherwise the colour absorbs more heat and can warp the siding. Sherwin-Williams says the same thing on its Duration sheet with the threshold set at LRV 56 and the exception being its VinylSafe colours. So the real answer is that you can paint vinyl siding, but you cannot paint it whatever colour you like. Going darker is the single most common way people destroy their own siding.
What is the LRV rule for painting vinyl siding?
Light Reflectance Value is a 0 to 100 scale measuring how much visible light a colour reflects, where 0 is black and 100 is white. The rule appears in the paint manufacturers'' technical data sheets rather than on their marketing pages, which is why so few people can source it. Benjamin Moore sets the floor at LRV 55 on the Aura Exterior Canadian sheet. Sherwin-Williams sets it at LRV 56 on the Duration Canadian sheet. Both add the same second condition, which people forget: not darker than the original colour either. A colour can clear the LRV threshold and still be darker than what is on your house now. The exceptions are the manufacturers'' engineered palettes, Benjamin Moore''s Colors for Vinyl and Sherwin-Williams'' VinylSafe.
Does painting vinyl siding void the warranty?
It can, and the paint manufacturer says so rather than only the siding manufacturer. Sherwin-Williams'' Duration Canadian data sheet instructs you to follow all painting guidelines of the vinyl manufacturer, to paint only properly installed vinyl siding, and states that deviating from the manufacturer''s painting guidelines may cause the warranty to be voided. Benjamin Moore''s contractor guidance similarly tells you to check the specific vinyl manufacturer''s guidelines and technical data sheet. The practical step is to find your siding manufacturer''s actual warranty document before you paint, because the terms differ between brands and I am not going to tell you that every warranty behaves the same way. If the siding is still under a warranty you care about, read it first.
Is aluminum siding better to paint than vinyl?
On the evidence, aluminum is the more straightforward repaint. Sherwin-Williams treats repainting chalked aluminum as routine and expected, saying aluminum siding is normally painted only after it has faded and chalked, and that the key consideration is not the application method but the surface prep. Vinyl by contrast carries a colour restriction, a requirement that the substrate be sound and stable, a warning about warping, and a manufacturer instruction to check the siding maker''s own guidelines. Aluminum has one big prep problem, chalk, and it is solvable with cleaning and the right primer. Vinyl has a permanent constraint on what colours you are allowed to use. That said, aluminum dents and vinyl does not, so condition matters as much as material.
What is chalking on aluminum siding and why does it matter?
Chalking is the fine white powder you get on your hand when you brush against old aluminum siding. Sherwin-Williams defines it as the formation of fine white powder on the surface of a paint film due to weathering, which may give the appearance of colour fading, and names an excessively thick chalk layer on factory-finished siding as a specific cause. The mechanism is UV breaking down the binder that holds the pigment in place, so loose pigment particles rise to the surface. It matters because paint applied over chalk is bonding to loose powder rather than to the siding. Sherwin-Williams states it plainly: if the chalkiness is not removed, the paint will not adhere properly. The field test is free. Rub a dark cloth or your fingers across the siding, and if a dusty film comes off, you have chalk.
What temperature can you paint siding at in Toronto?
It depends which siding, and this trips up more crews than anything else. Sherwin-Williams Duration and Emerald both state a general minimum of 1.7°C (35°C), but both carry a footnote that on large expanses of metal siding the air, surface, and material temperatures must be 10°C (50°F) or higher. In Toronto that compresses the aluminum siding window to roughly June through September, because the requirement is on surface temperature and metal loses heat fast in the evening. Benjamin Moore''s vinyl siding guidance sets its own floor, instructing you not to apply when air and surface temperatures are below 4.4°C (40°F). So a house that could technically be painted in October if it were wood may not be paintable in October because it is aluminum.
Why does vinyl siding paint crack at the panel overlaps?
Because vinyl siding is engineered to move continuously and a cured paint film spanning a moving joint has to move with it. The trade association for the industry, now called the Polymeric Exterior Products Association and formerly the Vinyl Siding Institute, requires installers to leave a quarter-inch gap between siding and all corner posts and channels, and to increase that to three-eighths of an inch when installing below 4.4°C. It also requires roughly a thirty-second of an inch between the fastener head and the siding, about the thickness of a dime, so that panels move freely side to side once fastened. Those are installation requirements, not tolerances, and they exist because the material expands and contracts across the temperature range. Paint bridging a gap that is designed to open and close is being asked to do something the siding itself is not asked to do.
Should I paint my siding or replace it?
Paint it if the substrate is sound and you can live within the colour rules. Replace it if the substrate is not. On vinyl, Sherwin-Williams'' own VinylSafe wording gives you the test: its darker colours resist warping when applied to a sound, stable vinyl substrate. Siding that is already brittle, cracked, warped, or coming loose at the channels does not become sound because you painted it. On aluminum, the questions are denting and chalk severity, and heavily dented siding will look dented in a new colour. There is no honest generic answer on cost, because the Canadian numbers circulating online come from lead-generation sites rather than from any independent source. Get two real quotes, one to paint and one to replace, and compare those.
