Quick Answer

Eavestrough and gutter painting in Toronto runs $5 to $10 per linear foot in 2026. Most homes land between $700 and $1,800 total depending on gutter length and condition. That is roughly one-third the cost of full gutter replacement, and a properly prepped paint job lasts 8 to 12 years.

I'm Chad, co-owner of Home Painters Pro. When you call us, you're talking to me — not a call centre, not a sales rep. I've personally handled over 1,500 painting projects across Toronto in 20+ years. I walk through every quote myself and make sure the work gets done right.

I am Chad Caglak, co-owner of Home Painters Pro. We have been painting Toronto eavestroughs for over 20 years, and I will walk you through exactly what this job costs, how we do it, and when painting makes more sense than ripping everything off and starting over.

Eavestrough Painting Cost by Home Type

The biggest factor in gutter painting cost is linear footage. More gutter means more paint, more prep, and more time on ladders. Here is what Toronto homeowners pay in 2026:

Home TypeGutter Length (ft)Cost Range
Bungalow120 - 160$700 - $1,200
Two-Storey160 - 220$1,000 - $1,800
Large / Custom220 - 300+$1,800 - $2,800+
Townhouse80 - 120$500 - $900

Minimum project charge: $500. We include downspouts in these prices. If your gutters have heavy oxidation, peeling, or extensive tiger striping, expect to land toward the higher end because prep time doubles.

Pricing by Gutter Material

Not all gutters take paint the same way. The material changes our prep approach and the products we use:

MaterialPer Linear FootNotes
Aluminum$5 - $8Most common in Toronto. Factory finish chalks over time. Needs bonding primer for non-ferrous metals.
Vinyl / PVC$5 - $7Requires adhesion promoter. Cannot sand aggressively or you damage the surface. Limited colour options hold up best.
Galvanized Steel$6 - $9Needs rust conversion where oxidation has started. Heavier prep but holds paint well once primed.
Copper$8 - $10Rare request. Most homeowners want the patina, but we can restore original copper tone or paint to match trim. Requires specialty primer.

Aluminum gutters account for about 85 percent of the eavestrough painting we do in Toronto. If you have seamless aluminum from the last 20 years, you are in the sweet spot for repainting.

Why Eavestroughs Fade and Peel

Your eavestroughs take a beating that most people do not think about. Here is what breaks down the factory finish:

  • UV exposure. Direct sunlight breaks down the resin in the original baked-on coating. South and west-facing gutters fade fastest.
  • Thermal cycling. Toronto swings from minus 25 in January to plus 35 in July. That is a 60-degree range that expands and contracts metal dozens of times per year.
  • Shingle runoff. Asphalt granules and petroleum residue from roof shingles wash down and bond electrostatically to the gutter surface. That is what creates tiger stripes.
  • Oxidation. Aluminum does not rust like steel, but it does oxidize. That chalky white film you can rub off with your finger is aluminum oxide eating through the finish.
  • Moisture and ice. Water sitting in gutters, ice dams in winter, and freeze-thaw cycles accelerate peeling at joints and seams.

If your gutters are more than 10 years old and you have never repainted them, they are overdue. The good news is that painting stops the degradation cycle and adds another decade of protection.

Our 4-Step Eavestrough Painting Process

We have refined this process over 20 years. Every step matters, and skipping any one of them leads to failure within two to three years.

Step 1: Deep Cleaning

We start with a full cleaning using a TSP (trisodium phosphate) solution and hand-scrub every section of gutter. Tiger stripes get special attention with a dedicated gutter cleaning solution and non-abrasive scrub pads. We rinse everything with a pressure washer on a fan tip, not a pinpoint nozzle that would dent the aluminum.

Step 2: Prep and Repair

Loose or flaking paint gets scraped. We check every joint, end cap, and downspout connection for damage. Minor dents get straightened. If we find sections with holes or structural damage, we will tell you before we paint so you can decide whether to repair or replace those sections. We lightly scuff the entire surface with fine abrasive pads to give the primer something to grip.

Step 3: Priming

This is where most DIY gutter painting fails. Standard primer does not bond to factory-finished aluminum. We use a bonding primer specifically formulated for non-ferrous metals. On steel gutters with rust, we use a rust-converting primer that chemically neutralizes the oxidation. One coat, full coverage, brushed into every seam and corner.

Step 4: Two Coats of Finish Paint

We apply two coats of 100 percent acrylic urethane or DTM enamel. The first coat goes on by brush and mini roller to work paint into seams, joints, and bracket areas. The second coat is sprayed for a smooth, even factory-like finish. We mask off siding, fascia, and soffit to keep overspray where it belongs.

The full process takes one to two days depending on gutter length and how much prep work your gutters need.

Best Paint for Eavestroughs in Toronto

I get asked about this constantly, so here is what we actually use and why:

Acrylic urethane (our go-to). Benjamin Moore's DTM Acrylic Semi-Gloss or Sherwin-Williams Pro Industrial DTM Acrylic. These flex with temperature swings, resist UV fade, and stay glossy for years. Semi-gloss or satin finish sheds water and resists dirt pickup.

Alkyd/oil-based enamel (specific situations). We use oil-based DTM enamel on galvanized steel gutters or where adhesion to a previously oil-painted surface is critical. Better penetration on rusty or pitted surfaces.

What we never use. Standard latex house paint. Flat finish on gutters. Spray paint from a rattle can. Any of these will peel within one to two Toronto winters. Guaranteed.

Colour Matching Your Eavestroughs to Your Home

Most Toronto homeowners want their eavestroughs to disappear into the exterior. Here is how we approach colour selection:

  • Match the fascia. This is the most popular choice and gives the cleanest look. Your gutters blend into the roofline and the eye focuses on the siding and trim.
  • Match the trim. If your fascia, window trim, and doors are all the same colour, matching gutters to that colour creates a unified frame around your home.
  • Contrast intentionally. Dark gutters on a light home or white gutters on dark siding can look sharp when done deliberately. We bring fan decks and large colour chips to your home so you see the colour against your actual exterior in natural light.

We can match any Benjamin Moore or Sherwin-Williams colour, including custom tints. If you recently had your siding painted or your exterior repainted, we will pull the exact colour formula to ensure a perfect match.

Painting vs Replacing Eavestroughs: Cost Comparison

This is the question I answer most often. Here is a straight comparison:

PaintingReplacement
Cost per linear foot$5 - $10$12 - $20
Typical bungalow total$700 - $1,200$1,800 - $3,200
Typical two-storey total$1,000 - $1,800$2,500 - $4,400
Lifespan of result8 - 12 years15 - 25 years
DisruptionLow (1-2 days)Medium (1-2 days + disposal)
Structural repairMinor fixes onlyFull replacement

When painting is the right call: Gutters are structurally sound, no sagging, no major dents, no holes. The finish is faded, chalky, or has tiger stripes but the metal is solid. This is 80 percent of the jobs we quote.

When replacement makes more sense: Gutters are sagging, pulling away from the fascia, have multiple leaking joints, or are more than 25 years old with corroded seams. We will tell you if your money is better spent on new gutters rather than paint.

Toronto Weather and Your Eavestroughs

Toronto is tough on gutters. Our weather creates a perfect storm of damage:

  • Winter ice dams push against gutter seams and loosen brackets, exposing bare metal to moisture.
  • Spring pollen and debris clog gutters, trapping moisture that eats through weakened finishes.
  • Summer UV bakes south-facing gutters at surface temperatures exceeding 60 degrees Celsius.
  • Fall leaves create acidic decomposition that stains and degrades paint.

We paint eavestroughs from May through October when temperatures stay above 10 degrees Celsius for proper paint adhesion and curing. If your gutters need attention before painting season, we can do the cleaning and prep work early and schedule painting for the first warm stretch.

Why Toronto Homeowners Choose Us for Gutter Painting

We are not a gutter installation company that paints on the side. We are painters who specialize in exterior surfaces including metal, siding, and eavestroughs. That means:

  • Proper surface prep, not just a quick spray and walk away
  • Premium DTM coatings, not leftover house paint
  • Colour matching to your exact exterior palette
  • Honest assessment of whether painting or replacement is the right move

We have painted thousands of linear feet of eavestroughs across Toronto, Etobicoke, North York, Scarborough, and the GTA. Every project gets the same 4-step process regardless of size.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does gutter painting cost in Toronto in 2026?
Gutter painting in Toronto costs $5 to $10 per linear foot in 2026, with most homes falling in the $6 to $8 range. A standard bungalow with 120 to 160 feet of gutter runs $700 to $1,200. A two-storey home with 160 to 220 feet costs $1,000 to $1,800. Prices include cleaning, prep, priming, and two coats of paint. Heavily oxidized or peeling gutters need more prep, which pushes the price toward the higher end.
Can you paint aluminum eavestroughs?
Yes. Aluminum eavestroughs are the most common type we paint in Toronto. The factory baked-on finish fades and chalks after 10 to 15 years. We clean off the oxidation, apply a bonding primer designed for non-ferrous metals, then two coats of acrylic urethane. The result lasts 8 to 12 years with proper prep.
Is it cheaper to paint or replace eavestroughs?
Painting is roughly one-third to one-half the cost of full replacement. New seamless aluminum gutters run $12 to $20 per linear foot installed, while painting costs $5 to $10 per foot. If your gutters are structurally sound with no major dents, holes, or sagging, painting is the smarter investment. We will tell you honestly if replacement makes more sense.
What about those black tiger stripes on my gutters?
Tiger stripes are streaks of electrostatic bonded dirt and asphalt runoff from your shingles. You cannot just paint over them because they will bleed through. We use a specialized cleaning solution and hand-scrub every streak before priming. It is the most labour-intensive part of the job, but skipping it guarantees a bad result.
What kind of paint do you use on eavestroughs?
We use 100 percent acrylic urethane or DTM (direct-to-metal) enamel from Benjamin Moore or Sherwin-Williams. These paints flex with temperature swings from minus 30 to plus 35 without cracking, resist UV fade, and bond to primed metal surfaces. We never use standard latex wall paint on gutters.
How long does eavestrough paint last in Toronto weather?
With proper cleaning, priming, and two coats of quality paint, eavestrough paint lasts 8 to 12 years in Toronto. South-facing gutters that take full sun fade faster, closer to 8 years. North-facing gutters in partial shade can go 12 years or more. Regular gutter cleaning extends the life of the finish.
Can you match my gutter colour to my new siding or trim?
Absolutely. We colour-match to any siding, trim, or soffit colour using the Benjamin Moore or Sherwin-Williams fan deck. Most Toronto homeowners go with a colour that matches their fascia board for a clean, seamless look. We bring colour samples to your home so you can see them against your actual exterior before we start.
Do you paint downspouts too?
Yes. We always recommend painting downspouts at the same time as eavestroughs so everything matches. Downspouts are included in our per-linear-foot pricing. We disconnect them where possible to paint behind brackets and ensure full coverage with no missed spots.
